Cover Photos: A Simple Definition

In the beginning it was only Facebook, later Twitter joined in, followed by LinkedIn... Any clues for what I am talking about? Yes, it is cover photos!

Cover photos first arrived on the social media platform Facebook in 2012, becoming instantly popular with users. Twitter decided to act fast and launched their cover photo months after Facebook, but LinkedIn waited a little longer an launched their cover photo last year. 

Facebook 

Facts:

  • Your cover photo is public.
  • Your cover photo can not infringe someone else's copyright.
  • You can not encourage people to upload your cover photo onto their personal timelines.

Sizes:

  • Your Profile Picture displays as 160 pixels wide by 160 pixels tall on the computer platform and 140 X 140 pixels on the smartphone app. But the image you upload must be 180 X 180 pixels.
  • Your Cover Photo is 851 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall on the computer platform and 640 wide by 360 tall on the smartphone app.

 

Twitter 

Facts:

  • Twitter made their cover photo larger in 2014.

Sizes:

  • Your Profile Picture dimensions are 400 pixels wide by 400 pixels tall.
  • Your Cover Photo dimensions are 1500 pixels wide 500 pixels tall.

LinkedIn 

Facts:

  • At first LinkedIn only offered a cover photo to their premium users.
  • You can only upload JPG, GIF or PNG images as your cover photo.
  • Only premium members have access to preloaded image gallery.

Sizes:

  • Your Profile Picture will be displayed at 200 pixels wide by 200 pixels tall.
  • Your Cover Photo dimensions must be between 1000 pixels wide by 425 pixels tall and 4000 pixels wide by 4000 pixels tall.
