Wimbledon Special: How Andy Murray Wins at Twitter

Monday 22 June 2015

By Sarah Burns

We've got the strawberries and cream and Andy Murray has got his 2nd Wimbledon win in the bag (we hope). He's also a Twitter winner!

Here is a rundown of why he is one of our favourite tweeting sportsmen!

Sometimes celebrities use Twitter purely for self promotion, financial gain or to make a point ('I've lost weight', 'I'm fine since the split', blah blah blah...).  We've chosen Andy Murray as a great example of a celeb doing it right, because you won't find belfies, Twitter wars or any other of those typical showbiz antics...

4 Ways Andy Murray Wins At Twitter

1. He loves emojis as much as the next tweeter

Who can forget this brilliant use of emoji (days before the new emojis were launched)? We were impressed with his run through of his wedding day and we hope it calmed his nerves.

Which other celebrities can say a bunch of emojis got them newspaper column inches and THAT many retweets?!

P.s. Congrats Andy & Kim

2. He runs Twitter competitions as a thank you

Amongst the MANY appreciative tweets he directs to fans, family and friends, he also gives away personalised items as a thank you to his 3m Twitter followers!

You're too kind, Andy!

3. He's pretty normal

Everybody has those tweets where they are pretty mundane or that anybody could have, unless you're a celebrity. Most celebs use Twitter as a means to promote their better - or ideal - self, not their real self. Whereas Andy uses Twitter to prove that even he is an ordinary guy, who is occasionally forced into a Christmas jumper - we feel your pain!

(It's also reassuring to see that he isn't celebrating Christmas in a mansion, villa or castle of some kind like a Kardashian...)

4. Andy hasn't lost his British humour

We'd all love it if the likes of Dunblane, in Scotland, was regularly enjoying 44 degree heat, but as British people we understand it's unlikely any part of the British Isles will ever see over 40 degrees... Seeing the temperature rise above 15 degrees Celsius is enough to make the UK get their flip flops out!

Andy keeps it real in every aspect of his Twitter profile, so here is his dry humour when it comes to enjoying Perth..
